Why Bangladesh for jute yarn
Bangladesh spins a large share of global jute yarn, with local fibre keeping prices competitive and a wide range of grades available. As with any spun product, the value is in consistency: a good mill holds the count and strength across the whole order, a weak one does not.
Jute yarn types and grades
Jute yarn is specified by grade and count (its thickness, expressed in lbs per spindle or in pounds). The main grades are:
- Hessian yarn: finer, for weaving hessian (burlap) cloth.
- Sacking yarn: coarser and stronger, for heavy sacking cloth.
- CB (Carpet Backing) yarn: for carpet and rug backing.
- CRM and weft grades: specific counts for particular weaving needs.
Yarn also comes on spools (cops) or in hanks, single or plied, with the twist set to the use. Specify the grade, the count, the ply and the packing.
How to specify and evaluate a jute yarn mill
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Export license | ERC and Department of Jute license |
| Mill-direct spinning | They spin the yarn themselves, for consistent count and price |
| Grade & count range | Can supply your grade (hessian, sacking, CB, CRM) and count |
| Consistency | Holds count, strength and moisture across the full order |
| Samples | Sends sample spools or hanks before bulk |
| Packing | Spools or hanks, baled and labelled to your spec |
| Inspection | Accepts independent inspection before shipment |
Red flags to watch for
- Count or strength that drifts between batches.
- No sample spools offered before a bulk order.
- High moisture inflating the weight you pay for.
- Buying from a spinner they will not name (you want mill-direct).
