Jute Yarn Manufacturer Bangladesh: Grades, Counts and the Language of the Trade

Sourcing jute yarn from a Bangladesh manufacturer means navigating a grade system that is specific to the industry and not always self-explanatory to buyers outside spinning and weaving. The grades, CB, CRM, CRT, CRX, Hessian, Sacking, describe the raw-fibre quality used and, by extension, the fineness, lustre and end-use suitability of the yarn. Understanding them is the starting point for any accurate specification.

Jute yarn count is expressed in pounds per spyndle (lbs), where a higher number means a finer, lighter yarn. A 6-lb yarn is coarse and heavy; a 32-lb yarn is fine and used for lightweight hessian weaving. Most industrial buyers work in the 8–20 lb range. Ply indicates how many single strands are twisted together: 1-ply is a single-strand yarn; 2-ply is two singles twisted together for added strength; 3-ply is used for rope, twine and heavy industrial applications.

Grade by grade

CB, CRM, CRT, CRX, Hessian, Sacking, Explained

Jute yarn grade reference
Hessian gradeSpun from fine, long-staple Tossa fibre. Produces a smooth, even yarn in the 10–32 lb count range. Used for weaving hessian/burlap cloth (7–10 oz/40"), shopping bags and fine packaging fabric.
Sacking gradeCoarser fibre than hessian grade; 6–16 lb counts. Used for sacking fabric (coffee, cocoa, potato, grain sacks), heavy-duty bags and woven substrates for carpet backing.
CB (Carpet Backing)A specific sacking-grade yarn designated for carpet-backing weaving. Produced in counts of 10–28 lbs, single and 2-ply. The defining requirement is consistent count, low variation and clean twist, crucial for high-speed weaving looms.
CRMCoarser than CB; produced from good-quality secondary fibre. Used in rug tufting backing, heavy woven cloth and tarpaulin substrates. Count range: 6–14 lbs.
CRTCoarser still; used in upholstery webbing, coil-spring tying twine and seating substrate webs. Also used in cord for industrial bundling. Count range: 6–12 lbs.
CRXThe coarsest grade in the CR family; produced from shorter-staple or secondary fibre. Used for heavy twine, rope core, and agricultural binding cord where fineness is not required.

Coloured yarns (dyed in batches using reactive dyes) and polished or waxed yarns for improved runnability on high-speed looms are also available across most grades. Coated yarns with a thin lubricant finish reduce breakage rates during weaving and are preferred by European carpet-backing mills. Specify "polished" or "coated" in your inquiry if this is required.

Packaging & supply formats

Spool Types, Hank Formats and Container Loading

Conical Paper Spool

The standard for weaving mills. Yarn wound on a tapered paper cone at controlled tension; fits shuttleless and rapier looms directly. Available in 100 g to 5 kg per spool. Most common format for hessian and CB grades.

Wooden Spool

A reusable spool format preferred by some carpet-backing and industrial weaving operations. Higher unit cost but eliminates paper-core disposal. Available on request for regular buyers.

Hank / Truss

Loose-wound hanks of 100 g to 20 kg, banded and packed in export cartons. Used by twine manufacturers, hand-weavers and craft buyers. Hanks allow easy dyeing or further processing before re-winding.

Coreless & Parallel Spool

Coreless winding suits buyers who re-wind in-house. Parallel (cylindrical) spools are used for twisting and doubling operations. Both formats available in standard count ranges.

For container loading: spools in export cartons are palletised for a clean FCL load. A 20' FCL typically carries 13–15 metric tonnes of yarn depending on spool weight and packing density; a 40' FCL approximately 26–28 metric tonnes. Trusses and loose hanks can increase density slightly. We supply packing lists with gross/net weights per carton for customs clearance in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium and the GCC.

End-use sectors

Where Jute Yarn Goes, Applications by Industry

  • Hessian and sacking weaving: Yarn is the direct input for all woven jute fabric, hessian cloth, sacking, geotextile matting. Mills specify count, grade and ply to match their loom settings.
  • Carpet backing: CB and CRM yarn is woven into the primary and secondary backing of tufted carpets. European carpet manufacturers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany are major importers of Bangladesh CB yarn.
  • Twine and cordage: CRX and CRT grades in 2-ply and 3-ply are twisted into agricultural twine, baling twine and garden string, used by farmers across the GCC for date-palm cultivation and irrigation-pipe bundling.
  • Upholstery webbing: CRT yarn is woven into seat-webbing strips for furniture manufacturing; used across European upholstery industries as a natural alternative to synthetic elastic webbing.
  • Craft and retail: Fine hessian-grade yarn in natural or dyed form is sold through craft distributors in the UK and Europe for macramé, basket weaving and textile art.

Buyer FAQ, Jute Yarn

What count range is typical for carpet-backing CB yarn?

Most carpet-backing operations use CB yarn in the 10–20 lb count range, single or 2-ply. The exact count depends on the backing weight specified by the carpet manufacturer. We can match to your sample or technical sheet.

Can you supply coloured or dyed jute yarn?

Yes. Yarn can be dyed in a range of colours using reactive dyes. Standard natural (golden brown) and bleached (light cream) are available ex-stock. Custom colours are produced in minimum batch quantities, include your Pantone or RAL reference in the inquiry.

What is the difference between CRM and CRT grade?

CRM (Carpet Roll Machine) is a medium-coarse grade suitable for woven carpet backing and heavy fabric substrates. CRT (Carpet Roll Twisted) is slightly coarser and used for upholstery webbing, coil-spring tying cord and industrial bundling twine. Both are single or 2-ply; CRT is more commonly used in 2-ply and 3-ply applications.

Do you supply yarn on reusable wooden spools?

Yes, wooden spools are available for regular-volume buyers who prefer the reusable format. Lead times are slightly longer and unit cost is higher than paper cone; minimum spool quantities apply. Enquire for details.

What is the moisture content of exported yarn?

Jute yarn absorbs atmospheric moisture, standard export moisture is 12–14%. Sealed poly-lined cartons maintain this level during ocean transit. Buyers in humid climates (GCC, West Africa) should check bales or cartons promptly on arrival and store under cover.

Can samples be supplied before placing an order?

Sample skeins of 200–500 g per grade are available for testing and loom trials. Courier costs are for the buyer's account. Samples accurately represent the production lot in count, twist and grade.
