Hessian Cloth Wholesale: Understanding Weight, Width and Grade

When buyers source hessian cloth wholesale, the first point of confusion is almost always the weight notation. Bangladesh and India quote cloth weight as ounces per 40-inch linear yard (oz/40"), a mill convention dating back to the Dundee loom era. European buyers who specify in GSM (grams per square metre) or oz/yd² will receive a different number for the same fabric. As a quick conversion reference: a 10 oz/40" hessian weighs approximately 285–295 GSM; a 12 oz/40" is roughly 340–355 GSM. We quote both on every pro-forma invoice to avoid specification errors.

Cloth width is equally important. Standard widths from Bangladesh mills are 40", 45", 60" and 72". Packaging converters in the Netherlands and Germany typically prefer 40" for bag-making; landscaping and geotextile distributors often want 60" or 72" for cut-and-lay applications. UK sandbag manufacturers usually work in 40" because it aligns with traditional sandbag dimensions.

  • 7–8 oz/40" (≈200–230 GSM): Lightweight hessian for inner liners, gift wrap, craft substrates and light horticultural covers.
  • 9–10 oz/40" (≈255–295 GSM): General-purpose packaging, potato bags, onion sacks, coffee outer covers, nursery balling cloth.
  • 11–12 oz/40" (≈315–355 GSM): Heavy-duty sandbags, flood-defence applications, construction site protection, weed-suppression matting.

Porter (ends per inch) and shot (picks per inch) determine weave tightness and tensile strength. A 10×9 construction produces a more open weave suited to root-balling; an 11×12 construction is tighter and stronger, used for sandbags and load-bearing sacks. We supply both; specify your requirement in the RFQ.

Terminology guide

Hessian vs Burlap vs Gunny, What's the Difference?

The three terms describe the same base material, woven jute fabric, but carry different regional meanings and, in trade, slightly different quality connotations. Understanding this is essential for cross-border purchasing.

Regional terminology comparison
TermHessian
Where usedUnited Kingdom, European Union, Australia, GCC
Typical gradeWoven jute fabric, 7–12 oz/40"; medium-to-fine weave
Common applicationsPackaging cloth, bags, sandbags, interior décor, horticulture
TermBurlap
Where usedUnited States, Canada
Typical gradeEquivalent to hessian; same fabric, different name
Common applicationsErosion blankets, landscaping, sack-making, craft
TermGunny
Where usedSouth Asia, GCC, East Africa
Typical gradeHeavier sacking-grade jute; often 12 oz+ and coarser weave
Common applicationsAgricultural sacks (rice, sugar, cocoa), heavy commodity packing

For buyers in the UK and Germany, "hessian" is the correct specification term and the one mills understand immediately. GCC buyers, particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, often use "gunny" to mean any coarse jute sack, not necessarily a specific weight or construction. When sending an RFQ, always specify weight (in oz/40" or GSM), width, porter/shot, and intended use so our team can confirm the right product. Our detailed guide at Hessian vs Burlap vs Gunny covers this in full.

Applications by market

Where Hessian Cloth Is Used, Sector by Sector

Agricultural Packaging

Potato, onion, carrot and root-vegetable bags across the Netherlands, Germany and the UK; coffee outer sacks; cocoa and grain covers. Hessian breathes, preventing condensation and spoilage in cold-chain transit.

Construction & Civil

Sandbags for flood defence and site containment; balling cloth for tree and shrub transplants in landscaping projects; site-protection hessian around scaffolding and sensitive structures.

Horticulture & Landscaping

Root-ball wrapping (rootball hessian) for nursery stock; weed-control cloth under gravel paths; frost protection for tender shrubs and young trees. Biodegrades naturally without residue.

Retail & Décor

Interior designers in the UK and GCC use lighter 7–8 oz hessian for wall coverings, display boards, hamper lining and sustainable gift packaging. Compliant with EU PPWR's push for natural fibre packaging.

Buyer FAQ, Hessian Cloth & Bags

What is the minimum order quantity for hessian cloth?

For cloth rolls, we typically work in full-bale quantities (1,000–2,000 yards per bale) with a minimum of one FCL. For cut hessian bags or sandbags, MOQ is usually 10,000–20,000 pieces depending on size. Contact us with your specification for an exact MOQ.

Can you supply both oz/40" and GSM specifications on the same pro-forma?

Yes, this is standard practice for our EU and UK buyers. Every pro-forma and packing list carries both the oz/40" mill weight and the equivalent GSM to ensure no mismatch between your specification and what's shipped.

What widths are available and can you cut to custom widths?

Standard loom widths are 40", 45", 60" and 72". Custom cuts or slit rolls are available; cutting charges and minimum quantities apply. Specify your required width and usage in your RFQ.

Is hessian cloth suitable for food-contact packaging?

Standard hessian is used for indirect food packaging (outer covers, secondary sacking). For direct food contact, such as coffee or cocoa inner bags, food-grade treatment and appropriate certification documentation are required. See our food-grade jute bags line for those specifications.

Do sandbags come pre-filled or empty?

We supply empty hessian sandbags in standard sizes (typically 14"×26" or 18"×30"), flat-folded and bale-packed for container shipping. Filling is done at the destination. We can supply with or without a sewn-shut end, and with or without a drawstring closure.

Can hessian cloth meet EU PPWR natural fibre requirements?

Yes. Jute hessian is 100% natural fibre, biodegradable and compostable, making it fully aligned with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation's preference for renewable-origin materials. Documentation confirming fibre composition is available on request.
