Hessian Cloth Wholesale: Understanding Weight, Width and Grade
When buyers source hessian cloth wholesale, the first point of confusion is almost always the weight notation. Bangladesh and India quote cloth weight as ounces per 40-inch linear yard (oz/40"), a mill convention dating back to the Dundee loom era. European buyers who specify in GSM (grams per square metre) or oz/yd² will receive a different number for the same fabric. As a quick conversion reference: a 10 oz/40" hessian weighs approximately 285–295 GSM; a 12 oz/40" is roughly 340–355 GSM. We quote both on every pro-forma invoice to avoid specification errors.
Cloth width is equally important. Standard widths from Bangladesh mills are 40", 45", 60" and 72". Packaging converters in the Netherlands and Germany typically prefer 40" for bag-making; landscaping and geotextile distributors often want 60" or 72" for cut-and-lay applications. UK sandbag manufacturers usually work in 40" because it aligns with traditional sandbag dimensions.
- 7–8 oz/40" (≈200–230 GSM): Lightweight hessian for inner liners, gift wrap, craft substrates and light horticultural covers.
- 9–10 oz/40" (≈255–295 GSM): General-purpose packaging, potato bags, onion sacks, coffee outer covers, nursery balling cloth.
- 11–12 oz/40" (≈315–355 GSM): Heavy-duty sandbags, flood-defence applications, construction site protection, weed-suppression matting.
Porter (ends per inch) and shot (picks per inch) determine weave tightness and tensile strength. A 10×9 construction produces a more open weave suited to root-balling; an 11×12 construction is tighter and stronger, used for sandbags and load-bearing sacks. We supply both; specify your requirement in the RFQ.
