Raw Jute Exporters in Bangladesh: A Buyer's Sourcing Guide

Bangladesh produces the lion's share of the world's raw jute, so it is the natural place to buy graded fibre, but quality varies a lot between exporters. This guide explains what you are actually buying, how grade and price connect, and how to vet a raw jute exporter before you commit to a bale order.

Why Bangladesh for raw jute

Bangladesh grows most of the world's jute and its Tossa fibre is prized for length, strength and lustre. Because the fibre is local, export pricing is competitive and the supply is deep and year-round after harvest. The trade-off is variability: grade and moisture differ between sellers, so vetting matters more than with a finished product.

What you are actually buying: grades

Raw jute is sold by grade, not as one commodity. Bangladesh grades on a letter scale, A (best) to E, within Bangla Tossa (BTA to BTE) and Bangla White (BWA to BWE), plus root-end cuttings (BTCA, BWCA) and Mesta. The grade decides strength, cleanliness and price, so always buy to a grade code, never just buy raw jute. Our raw jute grades guide explains the full scale.

How to evaluate a raw jute exporter

How to vet a raw jute exporter
CheckWhat to look for
Export licenseERC and a raw-jute export license (raw jute is separately regulated)
Grade accuracyThe bales match the graded code you ordered, confirmed by sample
Sample balesWilling to send a representative sample before the bulk order
Moisture & balingProperly dried and pressed bales; high moisture is added weight you pay for
InspectionAccepts independent inspection of grade and weight before shipment
Incoterm & portClear FOB Chattogram pricing, tonnage and shipment schedule

Price and grade: what drives cost

Price tracks grade. Higher letters (A, B) are stronger, cleaner and dearer; lower grades and cuttings are cheaper and suit coarse goods. Moisture and root content also matter, you do not want to pay fibre prices for water or hard root ends. Quote a grade and a moisture expectation, and price like for like across sellers.

Red flags to watch for

  • Grade labelled higher than the sample actually is.
  • Damp or poorly pressed bales (extra weight, mould risk).
  • No willingness to allow inspection of grade and weight.
  • No raw-jute export license (it is regulated separately from finished goods).

Quick answers

FAQ

Who exports raw jute from Bangladesh?

Many mills, traders and dedicated fibre exporters do. The important step is vetting: confirm the raw-jute export license, check the grade against a sample, and allow inspection before shipment.

How do I check raw jute quality before buying?

Order to a specific grade code (such as BTC), request a representative sample bale, and use an independent inspection of grade, moisture and weight before the bulk shipment leaves.

What Incoterm is used for raw jute?

Raw jute is usually quoted FOB Chattogram, with CFR or CIF on request. Agree the Incoterm, tonnage and schedule in writing.

Is raw jute export regulated in Bangladesh?

Yes. Raw jute export is licensed separately from finished jute goods, so a genuine exporter holds the specific raw-jute export authorisation.
