What jute webbing is
Jute webbing is a strong woven band, around 3.5″ (90 mm) wide, stretched across a furniture frame to support the springs and cushions of upholstered seats and backs. It is the traditional, natural alternative to rubber and synthetic webbing, and it is still specified by furniture makers and restorers who want a jute base. Jute tape is the same fabric in narrower widths for binding, trim and industrial use. We weave both in our own mill in Bangladesh and supply them in bulk rolls to the trade, not in retail cut lengths.
Red stripe vs black stripe
Upholstery jute webbing comes in two standard grades, identified by the coloured stripe woven down the centre:
- Red stripe (heavy, ~11 lb): the heavy-duty grade for seat bottoms, where the webbing carries the spring load and the sitter's weight.
- Black stripe (lighter, ~9 lb): a lighter grade for chair backs and sides, where the load is lower.
We supply both, plus plain and custom widths and weights to your specification for industrial and non-upholstery uses.
What jute webbing and tape are used for
- Upholstery: spring support in seat bottoms, backs and arms of sofas, chairs and benches.
- Furniture manufacturing and restoration: the traditional jute base for sprung and webbed seats.
- Industrial tape: binding, edge reinforcement and natural-fibre banding.
