Jute Geotextile Specifications: GSM, Mesh, Strength and Lifespan

Jute geotextile, also called jute soil saver or jute mesh, is an open-weave biodegradable matting for erosion control. Here are the specifications civil engineers and landscapers actually need: weight, mesh, strength, lifespan and the standards it meets.

Standard specification

Typical export jute geotextile, with the values most projects specify:

Jute geotextile typical specification
PropertyTypical value
Weight400 to 700 GSM (500 GSM most common)
Mesh opening~10 to 20 mm squares (open area ~60 to 65%)
Roll width4 to 8 ft (1.2 to 2.4 m)
Tensile strength~10 to 12 kN/m (ASTM D2977)
Lifespan12 to 24 months, then biodegrades
Material100% woven jute, fully biodegradable

What the weight (GSM) controls

GSM is the main lever. A heavier mat holds more soil and lasts longer before it breaks down. 500 GSM is the standard balance; 400 GSM suits gentle slopes and short-term cover, and 700 GSM is for steeper ground or longer establishment. Quote the GSM, not just ‘jute mesh’, so the supply matches the site.

Mesh size and why it matters

The ~1 to 2 cm apertures (open area around 60 to 65%) are the point of the product: they arrest soil particles and slow run-off while still letting seedlings push through, so vegetation establishes and takes over as the jute degrades.

Strength, slope and performance

At ~10 to 12 kN/m tensile, jute geotextile is rated for slopes up to about 3:1. Field studies have documented around 78% sediment-loss reduction on jute-lined plots. For steeper or longer-duration sites, step up to a heavier grade or use coir; our jute vs coir geotextile guide below covers the choice.

Standards it meets

Jute mesh satisfies NRCS Conservation Practice 605 and most State DOT Section 713 ‘Natural Fiber Mats’ specifications, so it can be specified directly on civil and highway projects.

How to specify

Tell us the slope, the expected time to vegetation establishment and the climate, and we will recommend GSM, mesh and roll size, then supply to spec.

Quick answers

FAQ

What GSM is jute geotextile?

Typically 400 to 700 GSM, with 500 GSM the most common all-round weight.

How long does jute geotextile last?

Generally 12 to 24 months depending on rainfall and humidity, by which point vegetation has usually established.

What slope can jute geotextile handle?

Up to about 3:1. For steeper banks use a heavier grade or coir geotextile.

Does jute geotextile meet DOT specifications?

Yes. It satisfies NRCS Conservation Practice 605 and most State DOT Section 713 natural-fibre-mat specs.
