Jute vs Coir Geotextile: Which Erosion-Control Mat to Use

Jute and coir are the two main natural-fibre erosion mats, and they are not interchangeable. The short version: jute is cheaper and degrades fast (months), ideal for gentle slopes and quick vegetation; coir is stronger and lasts years, for steep banks and slow establishment. Here is the comparison.

Lifespan is the main difference

Jute breaks down in 12 to 24 months, which is an advantage when vegetation establishes quickly and you want the mat gone. Coir lasts 2 to 5 years, which you need when establishment is slow or the site is harsh. Match the mat's life to how long the ground will take to hold itself.

Strength and slope

Coir's thicker coconut fibre gives higher tensile strength, so it holds steeper slopes and streambanks under flow. Jute is rated to about 3:1; beyond that, coir (or a jute-coir combination) is the safer call.

Cost: when jute wins

Jute is the cheaper fibre. For gentle slopes, quick-establishing vegetation and temporary protection on new plantings, jute gives the erosion control you need at a lower cost and biodegrades cleanly into the soil.

Which should you choose?

Choose jute geotextile for gentle slopes, temporary cover and budget projects. Choose coir for steep slopes, streambanks, high rainfall, saline sites or anywhere establishment is slow. We supply jute and can advise on the right fibre per project.

Quick answers

FAQ

Is jute or coir better for erosion control?

Neither is universally better. Jute suits gentle slopes and fast, temporary cover at lower cost; coir suits steep, long-term and high-rainfall sites.

How long does coir last compared to jute?

Coir lasts 2 to 5 years; jute lasts 12 to 24 months before it biodegrades.

Is jute geotextile cheaper than coir?

Yes, jute is the lower-cost natural-fibre mat.

Which is stronger, jute or coir geotextile?

Coir, because its coconut fibre is thicker and higher in tensile strength.
